Hi, I’m Drew, a full-time, professional (unpaid) job-application-sender living in Portland, Oregon.

I was born and raised in Portland, but spent a few years living around the country and on various continents. At 14, I started writing HTML/CSS/JS for my fan website about the movie The Fifth Element. 10,000 days later I earned a master’s degree in computer science. I did some things in between, too.

I’m a big fan of Linux and open source software. I switched exclusively to Linux about 5 years ago, and I went through my entire master’s program on a small, old Thinkpad running Debian without a desktop environment.

I’ve spent much of my life studying foreign languages and linguistics. I started out teaching myself German in middle school, and then Arabic, Chinese, and Russian in high school. Lately I’ve been focusing on Portuguese.

I’ve also been playing guitar since I was 11. For the past few years I’ve been studying Brazilian guitar, in the style(s) of players like Luiz Bonfá, Baden Powell, João Gilberto, and Nonato Luiz.

While we were all stuck at home during COVID, I started learning about RF (radio) technology and got my amateur radio license. This is something I would like to get very deep into, but haven’t found the time (or money) yet.
